NAAC (National Assessment & Accreditation Council)

The National Assessment And Accreditation Council (NAAC) is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country.

It was set up on recommendations of the National Policy in Education (1986) and it became functional from the year 1994.

NAAC accredits programmes and not institutions and it is not exclusive to B-schools.

Under the new norms introduced recently the agency has accredited around 30 B-school programmes.

Methodology

NAAC process is largely through online intervention and therefore very flexible and dynamic meeting the user needs. For the assessment of a programme, the NAAC follows a three-stage process which is a combination of self-study and peer review. The three stages are:

• The preparation and submission of a self-study report by the institution.
• The on-site visit of the peer team for validation of the self-study report and for recommending the assessment outcome to the NAAC.
• The final decision by the Executive Committee of the NAAC that would accord accreditation. The validity of the accreditation is for five years.

The self-study report to be validated by peers is the backbone of the whole exercise. NAAC manuals are available to explain the processes applied to different institutions of higher education, with detailed guidelines on the preparation of the self-study report and the other aspects of assessment and accreditation.

NAAC has identified the following seven criteria to serve as the basis of its assessment procedures:

  • Curricular Aspects
  • Teaching-Learning and Evaluation
  • Research, Consultancy and Extension
  • Infrastructure and Learning Resources
  • Student Support and Progression
  • Governance and Leadership
  • Innovative practices
